Overview

The Silk Road was an ancient network of trade routes that spanned from China to the Mediterranean, connecting diverse civilizations and fostering the exchange of goods, ideas, and culture. Originating around the 2nd century BCE, it facilitated the trade of valuable commodities such as silk, spices, and precious metals. Along its routes, bustling cities like Xi'an, Samarkand, and Constantinople emerged as vital hubs of commerce and cultural exchange. Notable travelers like Marco Polo and Ibn Battuta traversed its paths, documenting their encounters with different peoples and traditions. Despite facing challenges like political upheaval and the spread of diseases, the Silk Road flourished for centuries, leaving a lasting legacy of interconnectedness and cultural diffusion.
